William Hill make Cardinal Francis Arinze the 2/1 favourite to take over as Pope following the shock resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Arinze was the 11/4 favourite to get the gig last time around before being beaten to the position by Joseph Ratzinger. Arinze is closely followed in the betting by Peter Turkson at 5/2. Archbishop of Milan, Angelo Scola is 5/1 third favourite ahead of Archbishop of Genoa, Angelo Bagnasco, who is offered at 5/1.
“When Joseph Ratzinger took over as Pope, Francis Arinze ran him close in the betting and we think he could go one better this time around,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “Arinze took over from Pope Bendict as Cardinal Bishop of Velletri-Segni and the odds would suggest that he is due to follow in his footsteps again.”
Who will succeed Pope Benedict XVI as Pope: 2/1 Francis Arinze; 5/2 Peter Turkson; 5/1 Angelo Scola; 6/1 Angelo Bagnasco; 9/1 Tarciso Bertone; 9/1 Marc Ouellet; 12/1 Peter Erdo; 16/1 Leonard Sandri; 20/1 Jorge Mario Bergoglio; 20/1 Oscar Rodriguez; 25/1 Christoph Schonborn; 25/1 Claudio Hummes; 33/1 Renato Martino; 33/1 Vincent Nichols; 33/1 Timothy Dolan; 33/1 Raymond Burke...others on request .
