Gambled-on Penitent Looking To Punish The Bookies In The William Hill Lincoln

All eyes will turn to the Flat this week where the turf season opens with a bang at the William Hill Lincoln meeting at Doncaster.

The William Hill Lincoln – the traditional curtain-raiser to the turf season looks set to be another highlight – where 6-1 ante-post favourite Penitent heads the betting with the sponsors.

The William Haggas-trained four-year-old was made favourite by Hills when the betting opened, and has proved popular with punters – backed down to 6-1 from 8-1 within the last 24-hours. Other movers include 14-1 chance Mull of Killough – who has been as big as 25-1, and Harrison George now 25-1 from an opening 33-1.

Ante-post gamble Al Khaleej, and last year’s winner Expresso Star both failed to declare for the famous heritage handicap, leaving last year’s William Hill Spring Mile winner Manassas as the 9-1 second-favourite.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’We have clearly made the right horse favourite with Penitent attracting the bulk of the ante-post attention. William Haggas’-charge has the look of a perfect progressive candidate, and if the betting interest continues he could easily mirror the gamble we saw on last year’s winner Expresso Star.’’
